Water Pressure
The City of Alamogordo water distribution system is divided into five (5) pressure zones. A pressure zone is an area supplied by a source or multiple sources that provide a constant hydraulic gradient. Typically, the hydraulic gradient is provided by the high-water level of the ground or elevated storage reservoir serving the pressure zone. For pressure zones with no gravity storage, the hydraulic gradient may be provided by reducing pressure through multiple pressure reducing stations.
Zone 1
- The easternmost pressure zone
- Supplied by multiple wells located to the north of the city, one (1) surface water plant and a booster pump station.
- One reservoir provides gravity storage.
- Water is pressure reduced to Zone 2
Zone 2
- The second easternmost pressure zone
- Supplied by multiple wells located to the north of the city, one (1) surface water plant
- One (1) reservoir provides gravity storage with the aid of 2 pressure reducing stations
- Water is boosted from this zone to Zone 1
- Water is pressure reduced to Zone 3
- Additional supply can be provided as needed using zone valves
Zone 3
- Supplied by multiple wells located to the north and south of the city and supplemented by two (2) surface water plants
- Three (3) reservoirs provide gravity storage with the aid of 1 pressure reducing station
- Water is boosted from this zone to Zones 1
- Water is pressure reduced to Zone 4
- Additional supply can be provided as needed using zone valves
Zone 4
- Supplied by multiple wells located to the north and south of the city and supplemented by two (2) surface water plants
- Two (2) reservoirs provide gravity storage with the aid of 2 pressure reducing station
- Relies on Zone 3 for supply through 2 active pressure reducing stations
- Additional supply can be provided as needed using zone valves
Zone 5
- Supplied by multiple wells located to the north and south of the city and supplemented by two (2) surface water plants
- Relies on Zone 3 for supply through 2 active pressure reducing stations
- Additional supply can be provided as needed using zone valves
High Water Pressure
The city's service area is divided into five pressure zones. Water storage tanks (reservoirs) are located at a higher elevation than the area it serves so that water can flow by gravity. Homes at the lowest elevation from the reservoir will have higher pressure. Customers can install a pressure regulator in higher-pressure areas to reduce the water pressure coming into their homes. If your water pressure is high, your pressure regulator may need to be adjusted or serviced. It is recommended that a qualified plumber adjust your pressure regulator since incorrectly adjusting the pressure regulator can affect household appliances.
